I had been doing podcasts for about 2 years before I got this boom arm. What a difference it makes! While my initial concern was clearing up some desk space for me to have material I am using for my podcast on the desktop in front of me, it turned out to be a great way to also allow for more mobility as I record my podcast. Since my microphone is no longer anchored to a static mic stand on my desk, I am able to easily move about my workspace and just drag the mic along with me. It works silently and if you have a vibration cage attached to your mic while using this, you will not get any noise transmitted into your show when you do move the boom mic. In my case, the arm came perfectly balanced for my Mic right out of the box (Samson C03 Dual-Diaphragm Vocal Condenser Microphone with Case and Swivel Mount). This setup makes doing live shows (On blogspot radio for instance) much easier and comfortable.

So far, the only complaint I have is that as you move the arm around, it can slowly nudge the wire further and further down the arm, this results in the cable connection on the microphone getting pulled. Just remember to leave some slack at the microphone end and make sure the straps at the joints where the cable makes a turn are particularly tight.

This is not an inexpensive piece of equipment, and the do-it-yourselfer in me really wanted to try a desk lamp conversion instead, but I decided to entrust the support of my expensive microphones to the PSA 1 instead. Granted, it’s not cheap, but it’s still much less expensive than, say, a MIKARM or similar pro model that can easily set you back $300-500 with basic attachments.

I also considered the Heil Sound PL-2T, which seems to be of comparable price and quality, and features internal cable management (which the PSA 1 does not), but ultimately decided to give the PSA 1 a shot because it comes with both clamp and bushing mounts.

Having set it up and played with it a bit, I’m happy with the quality of the product. The chrome-plated hardware that comes with the boom is solid, and the overall package has a strong, no-nonsense feel to it. With the 5/8″ adapter in place, it now holds my beloved AT3035 conveniently and securely.

Prior to this, I was using a floor stand with boom, which offers great flexibility, but was always getting in my way and occasionally was in danger of tripping me and being knocked down. Having my mic mounted on the desk is safer and removes floor clutter from the area in front of my studio desk.

I’m satisfied enough with the nature and quality of the Rodes PSA 1 that I just ordered another for my office desk, where I plan to use it to hold my AT2020 USB podcasting mic.

I’m giving it four stars instead of five because I think a more reasonable price point for this model would be about 75% of what it is. However, that hasn’t stopped me from buying two of them anyway. ;-)

I have owned a few other RODE products so choosing their arm was an easy decision. I simply have it mounted to my desk and I use my mic for podcasting along with this arm. Before I was using a stand which was always in the way. This arm is perfect and light weight. It it perfect for podcasting or lighter use, if you need it to reach a long distance, this is not the arm for you. It is however the best option for regular desks. I plan to order a second one for my work station as well.

This arm works as it is supposed to and is a must have for adding a mic to your computer setup. It takes up minimal space and mounts very easily with clamp supplied or by drilling a small hole to allow mounting any where on your desk. There are no visible springs and the wire will stay very neat and tidy with supplied velcro fasteners. Looks very professional as well. It might be a little smaller than some, so check the dimensions before purchasing. It will reach out about 36 inches from mount point and stores handily above my 24 inch iMac, out of the way. I love it.
